From 1940 onwards, the petrochemical industry began producing DDT and other carcinogenic pesticides. In the same way that contaminated water makes us sick, a poisoned planet produces sick people. Cancer is the new name of this epidemic. President Nixon declared the War on Cancer in 1971, but to no avail. Nowadays, a man has 44 % chance of getting cancer, whereas for women this is 38 %. This is an increase with 24 % with respect to the year 1973. Within the current political system the big corporations producing carcinogenic products are not blamed at all. You are being blamed, with your “unhealthy lifestyle”. But then again, we are not being informed. Dr. Samuel Epstein sees it as follows : “Consumer product legislation is well overdue. All foods grown with the application of carcinogenic pesticides should be clearly labeled with a cancer warning, the name of each carcinogenic pesticide, and the concentrations of its residues”. Maybe this will be accomplished in the 22nd century. Let’s hope so.
In the meantime, we people living in the 21st century are on our own. Governments don’t care about us. Nobody will think in our place. Diet for a poisoned planet is a survival guide for people who don’t want to die from the 21st century. You will probably find organic foods less expensive after reading this book. Who is on a budget will receive tips on what eventually can be bought in a normal supermarket, and what should absolutely be avoided. It is important to highlight that also baby food is examined. The great news is that it is even possible to detoxify your body. Mr. Steinman is a living proof that high levels of DDT and PCB in your body can be expulsed. He has done it changing his diet and undergoing a vitamin therapy. This book is highly recommended. Five stars !

I was recently diagnosed with Celiac Disease. My doctor simply said you must follow a gluten free diet and referred me to a Registered Dietitian who handed me a bunch of print outs that really didn’t offer me a whole lot of needed information.

Mrs. Case’s book is a MUST have. I think all doctors, dietitians, nutritionists, friends, family and everyone that deals with, lives with, or cooks for someone with Celiac Disease should own this book AND read it. It’s packed with much needed information to finally achieve good health.

Included in this book are pages, yes PAGES of info on dietary reference intakes (DRI’s) of various nutrients like iron, folate, vitamin b12 etc in various food sources such as flours, starches, meats, beans, nuts, fruits and vegetables. Each nutrient is prefaced with a section that lists how much an infant, child, male, female, even pregnancy and lactation is covered.

You walk away from this book with enough confidence to create a menu, with an abundance of choices, that works for you and your family and you WILL get your health back on track.

Several important nuggets of information in this book:
1. The whole chapter on Digestive Ailments is itself worth it for me. The author explains the healing (and preventive) value of mucilage – found in raw potatoes, raw cabbage and gelatin (among other substances). The necessity of SOME raw mucilage in every meal is pointed out – without which digestion slows down – and undigested food ferments.

2. The preventive role played by whole grain is also well explained. Regarding whole grain, the author explains that certain parts of Northern India and China where grain based flour is staple have fewer incidents of ulcer(s) – whereas rice based staple (like Japan) have higher incidents of peptic ulcer. There are other illustrative stories of individuals with specific ailments – and how they overcame the same with dietary changes. These add to the readability of the book.

All in all – if you have any ailment that you think may require a diet-based approach (thyroid issues, digestive issues, diabetes, insomnia etc..) this book is a worthwhile read. Even if you get one or two nuggets out of it – like I did – it is far better than doctor visits.

I was just diagnosed with congestive heart failure and cannot have over 2,000 mgs of sodium per day. I plan on sticking to this way of eating because I am eating better than I have before and I am losing weight. These recipes are not rocket science, they do not take hours to prepare but are just good foods that are so much more healthier for us even if you don’t have congestive heart failure. Next time you buy groceries check your lables but don’t go into shock. When you decide to start reducing your sodium intake, check this book out. I think it is terrific and wished I had done this so much sooner.

I think that this book was very usefull both for me and my family.My mom really liked the book beacuse she wanted to lose weight and she did very quickly.The book has a couple of recepies and lots of information on the diet.The is diet great it is very easy and most of the food is good.I read the version in english first but decided to get the spanish version so my both my parents could try it.
