The Heartbreak Diet: A Story of Family, Fidelity, and Starting Over

Thorina Rose’s funny, beautifully illustrated memoir charts the unexpected dissolution of her marriage and the struggles and adventures of starting over. After marrying young, living in New York, and settling in San Francisco, Rose and her husband start a family. When he begins an affair with his ‘running partner,’ Rose must find a way to rebuild her life with her two young sons, navigating her own inner doubts, the chorus of advice from well-meaning friends, and coping mechanisms close at hand: retail therapy and pet adoption (not so useful); leaning on friends and travels with gay men (very useful). With humor and insight, The Heartbreak Diet is a moving and entertaining meditation on fidelity, family, and finding one’s way.

What author Thorina Rose calls an “illustrated memoir” may indeed set a new genre. In the most powerful and moving way using a mix of illustrations, short descriptive text, and dialogues kept to the minimum quintessential , we read and live in pictures her story, a “story of family, fidelity and starting over.”

The jacket design tells it all. Inner front page: Thorina pictures herself walking alone, upstream, under the rain, in a dark forest. Front cover: reminiscent of the familiar Morton salt girl (when it rains, it pours) Thorina holding an umbrella in one hand, extends the other one out, and yes it still rains, yet there is a silver lining. Back cover: the storm has passed, the sun shines and an umbrella, abandoned, lies upside down.

For anyone who has lived, directly or indirectly, the unfortunately common trajectory of marriage, family, infidelity, separation , and rebuilding, this intimately told story will resonate with all the palette of emotions: with the dismay, doubts, pain, revenge, fights, hope and the strenous seeking of inner peace and empowerment.

With the help of time, when all dust is settled, humour and comic arise from the inner tragedy of this almost universal story. The Heartbreaking Diet is better than therapy!

This book has it all; concise explanations of the etiology of each gastroenterologic problem and simple practical solutions. Generally, the doctor proposes a high fiber, low fat diet but each patient has to tailor their diet to their own specific needs as clearly there are certain foods that are fine for some, an irritant for others. I would note that contrary to one reviewer, I have made a number of the recipes. They are fairly simple, mostly typical ingredients and have been delicious.
The one problem I have with the book is the contradictory advice with respect to some specific food items. For example, if you suspect that your LES valve muscle is the culprit, the recipes in the 2 week plan contain a good deal of ingredients (citrus fruits, cocoa) which may irritate that condition. The doctor has not provided alternatives to substitute for these ingredients. Generally though, I think the implied message is you have got to get to know your body well as you lower the fat and increase the fiber in your diet.

It tells you how to choose the healthiest, safest, most earth-friendly food, as you make your way through the supermarket, your local farmer’s market, or your natural foods store. Highlights include: Making sense of the choices presented by organic, local, sustainable, minimally treated, grass-fed and cage-free foods Reducing your exposure to pesticides Save money by knowing the foods you want to eat only if they’re organic and the foods that are pesticide-free even when they are nonorganic Protecting your child’s health from pesticides An at-a-glance shopper’s guide to more than 100 foods

Like most books on Organics, the short version of this book is that when at all possible, you should buy Organic. However, unlike most Organics books, this book dives deeper and not only includes items you can (generally) safely buy non-organic versions of, but also reasons why the USDA Organic label may not always be required.

Oddly enough, this book can almost be called anti-Organic, as much of the contained material speaks to how the USDA’s lackluster labeling process paved the way for lessened standards compared to many of the self-regulated organics programs. Much of what the author Cindy Burke argues is that while the Organic label is a step in the right direction, it is, in many ways, a step backward.

The book presents several good cases for Farmer’s Markets and Co-ops where the consumer gets to know their farmer, rather than relying on a sticker provided by faceless corporate entity. I was also surprised to learn that several farmers voluntarily dropped their USDA-Organic label in protest of the government policies as well as due to the lessened standards on what quantifies an organic product. Some other enlightening facts included things such as the amount of Organic labeled foods that come from China, the USDA Pesticide Data Program as well as the steps needed for a farm to be certified USDA-Organic.

While most people will purchase this book for its list of the “Dirty Dozen,” the list of which foods never to buy non-organic, I honestly found the rest of the book more informative. Whereas many books on Organic foods simply tell you to always buy organic from your local farmer and bar no further discussion on the subject, this book is different in that it actually provides examples of why to do so, how we came to where we are today, as well as practical ways to start integrating organics into your life.
